John Mills spent years piecing together the legacy of Esther Wallace Jackson and her relatives — born free to formerly enslaved parents and connected to soldiers who served from the French and Indian War through the Civil War — and worked with local groups to install a burial marker honoring their contributions and preserve their place in history.

New Haven just won a $6.75 million state grant to revive the historic Goffe Street Armory as a community hub and affordable housing space.
